Pig racing in Cardiff

No - not a reason to call the RSPCA, but rather a fun event organised by Dave Collison and his co-workers to raise money for charity. KR Analytical sponsored pig number 1 in the second race. Our pig was called A.P.I.G, ( in case you're wondering Atmospheric Pressure Ion Generation) and stormed into an early lead. Pig 1 veered off course towards the end and it looked as if pig number 5 would take the race. However it hadn't allowed for the combined mass of the other 4 pigs snuffling at the back of pig 1 and eventually tipping it over the line for victory!!!

KR Analytical welcomes DART user from Russia

KR Analytical were proud to sponsor Dr Elena Chernetsova a senior researcher at the People's Friendship University of Russia to attend the recent BMSS meeting Cardiff. Dr Chernetsova has been working on the DART ion source for the analysis of pharmaceutical compounds, she presented a poster of her work titled "DART Mass Spectrometry - The ultra fast determination of the active ingredients of pharmaceuticals". Also present from the USA were Dr Brian Musselman COO of Ionsense Inc and Ms Elizabeth Crawford an application chemist from Ionsense who presented an oral titled " The use of DART-MS for the detection of contaminants and pesticides in various food sources". The photo shows from left to right. Elizabeth, Elena and Brian.

Workshop for Ambient Mass Spectrometry in Food Quality/Safety April 26-27th 2010

KR Analytical and IonSense recently sponsored a workshop on Food Quality & Safety which was held at the ICT in Prague and was organised by Professor Jana Hajslova and her colleagues. The aim of the workshop was to introduce people to the use of ambient ionisation techniques for the detection of food contaminants, adulterants and speciation of products. The empahsis was on the practical demonstration of the DART ions source as well as showing the ASAP probe. Informative lectures were presented by members of the BioCop project and also the manufactures of ambient ionsiation sources.

Many European countries were represented, including Belgium, France, Germany, Spain, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Poland, Norway, Sweden, Slovenia, USA and United Kingdom. This led to a lively workshop with plenty of discussions which continued into the social dinner on the Monday evening!!

We plan to hold more of these workshops over the coming months, venues will be announced via this webiste and via email. Please contact us to register your interest in future events.

The First Mass Spectrum of an Intact Crocodile!

When we said that a DART ion source requires no sample preparation, we didn’t really expect to see a complete crocodile. Admittedly it’s only a toy, but it’s still a first.

The photograph is courtesy of Professor Wolfgang Schwack’s group at the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart. You can see the complete paper in Rapid Communications in Mass Spectrometry, 2009 23: 2829-2835. “Rapid and non-destructive analysis of pthalic acid esters in toys made of poly vinyl chloride by direct analysis in real time single-quadrupole mass spectrometry”.
